The Winery
Quinta do Pégo and its 30 ha of classification level A vineyards is a dream come true of Danish wine enthusiast Karsten Søndergaard, whose company AMKA has been in full ownership of the project since 2003. Some with vines up to 70 years old. The winery specialises in Port wines of the highest quality (Vintage and Late Bottled Vintage) as well as outstanding Douro reds, which have long enriched the range. Cerro do Santo is the name of a ruin near Quinta do Pégo. To this day, lagares*, warehouses and even living quarters still exist there and are a dreamy reminder of a great past.
* Lagares is the name given in Portugal to those large, shallow fermentation tanks made of granite, concrete or, more recently, stainless steel, in which the grapes, their stems and stalks, are mashed with the feet.
Vinification
After pressing the grapes, temperature-controlled fermentation in steel tanks at around 25°C to 28°C and in traditional "lagares". Daily careful breaking of the caps via circulation (“remontage”) to extract colour and tannins. Finally, ten months of ageing in used oak barrels (second racking) before bottling.
The Wine
A brilliant dark ruby red with purple reflections in the glass. On the nose, an intense and enticing bouquet of fruits and dark berries, such as blackberries and blackcurrants, plus dried fruit, accentuated by subtle aromas of spices and perfectly integrated oak. These aromas are reflected on the palate. The wine is pleasantly powerful, showing good tannic structure and a remarkably velvety, elegant presence on the palate and in the long finish.
The Winemaker
Quinta do Pégo’s products are produced by Rozès winemaker Manuel Henrique and the South African winemaker Wouter Pienaar (until his death in 2020). After his death, another South African winemaker, Niel Bester, has taken over and in close co-operation with Manuel Henrique he continues the unique Quinta do Pégo style.
