Quinta do Pégo Grande Reserva Douro 2015
Description
Blend: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Sousão
The Winery
Quinta do Pégo and its 30 ha of classification level A vineyards is a dream come true of Danish wine enthusiast Karsten Søndergaard, whose company AMKA has been in full ownership of the project since 2003. Some with vines up to 70 years old. The winery specialises in port wines of the highest quality (Vintage and Late Bottled Vintage) as well as outstanding Douro reds, which have long enriched the range. The experienced, South African winemaker, Wouter Pienaar, a sweet wine aficionado, was responsible for the production of both wines and port wines until his passing in 2020.
Vinification
Manual harvest. The grapes are vinified separately. Cold maceration at temperatures between 10-12°C for 24 to 48 hours to extract aromas and polyphenols (colour, tannin). Then slow start of fermentation with pure yeasts. Fermentation of destemmed grapes in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 26-28°C for 10 days. Partial malolactic fermentation. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels for a further 10 to 12 months. After the final cuvée, the wine is bottled unfiltered and stored for some time before release.
The Wine
A brilliant, deep, dark purple-red shines in the glass with distinct violet reflections at the rim. Powerful attack on the nose with sweet aromas from the wood-ageing and dark berry flavours. After a short time, the complex bouquet reveals an intense, juicy-fruity scent of ripe blackberries, currants and black cherries, paired with subtle notes of vanilla sticks, cedar wood and juniper berries.
On the palate, the aromas are reflected with the same intensity and the wine convinces with its very good tannic structure and excellent balance. The fine wood notes and the dense fruit impression, accompany you until the finish. An elegant Douro wine with a velvety finish and good ageing potential.
The Winemaker
Quinta do Pégo’s products are produced by Rozès winemaker Manuel Henrique and the South African winemaker Wouter Pienaar (until his death in 2020). After his death, another South African winemaker, Niel Bester, has taken over and in close co-operation with Manuel Henrique he continues the unique Quinta do Pégo style.
